The cycle path
On the right of the Brenta river, between the mountain spurs of the Asiago Plateau, runs a cycle and footpath called Ciclopista del Brenta, an itinerary that connect the Trento plain of the Levico and Caldonazzo lakes to Valstagna, from where then, descending along the river bank and coming out in Oliero on the Strada Provinciale Campesana road, it leads right into the historic old town of Ponte Vecchio di Bassano.
It offers a stunning possibility for people who love to cycle in safety, combining being out in the open air with natural beauty.
The cycle path runs along the Valley and follows the course of the Brenta river. There are plenty of really interesting stops to make along the circuit. Departing from the Ponte Vecchio in Bassano del Grappa, a stop in Campese allows a visit to the Santa Croce Monastery where Merlin Cocai is buried (the monk Theophilus Folengo who wrote the poem Baldus in dog Latin in the 16th century). The next stop, in the Municipality of Valstagna, the Caves of Oliero are the valley’s most famous attraction. Moving along and entering Cismon del Grappa you can instead admire La Gusella, a striking rock formation and best of all the Covolo del Butistone, a formidable fortress inside a cave on a precipice above the valley, already in use in the times of the Ezzelini. The Trentino area then offers a natural beauty stop worth of note.
